“Do we need a cake?”
Jan 21 2016
When celebrating birthdays and special occasions, most of us look forward to that beautiful, sweet, delicious treat: THE CAKE. But why? How did we come to love this high point of any celebration? Simply: it’s tradition.
In classical Roman culture, ‘cakes’ of flat rounds leavened with yeast, sweetened with honey, and made from a flour containing nuts, were occasionally served at special birthdays—but more often at weddings, as in Ancient Greece.
In the 15th century, bakeries in Germany began making one-layer cakes for customers’ birthdays as well as for their weddings, and thus the modern birthday cake was born. During the 17th century, the birthday cake took on something close to its contemporary form. However, these elaborate cakes, which possessed many aspects of contemporary cakes (such as multiple layers, icing, and decorations), were only available to the very wealthy. In the 18th century, food and baking utensils became more accessible, and therefore affordable. With that, the price of cakes went down significantly and the number of cakes produced went up considerably. It then became part of everyone’s celebration traditions and for the past 200+ years we have all been hooked!
The next time you enjoy a celebration cake, remember that you are taking part in a time-tested tradition, and that all things can be good in moderation!
Working with a custom bakery like Sweet Events will allow you to customize and make your indulgent treat the high point of your celebration. Backed by tradition, a cake can say “special” to us like no other dessert—and sometimes, that is exactly what we need.
